Reservations

All hostels accept reservations and most accept credit cards. Reservations are an especially good idea during the busy tourism months or if you are interested in one of the private or family rooms.

Group Contact and Chaperone

Groups and events are required to select representatives to serve as the main contacts (U.S. adult 18 or older). This guarantees great service and information from hostel staff when you need it.

A Group Contact conducts official business:

    • Approve and sign the contract
    • Book and make updates to the reservation
    • Provide a single form of payment
    • Answer questions that group members have about the reservation or the hostel
    • Amend the contract with hostel group services, if necessary

A Group Chaperone supervises group members:

    • One adult chaperone is needed for every nine members (1:9) if most of the group is under age 18
    • If gender-specific dorm rooms are used one chaperone is required for each gender
    • The chaperone is responsible for members while on hostel grounds

Policies

All Ages
You may have heard that only "youth" can stay in hostels, but this is not true. Hostelling is for people of all ages and background.

Nonmembers
Nonmembers who are U.S. residents may stay at HI-USA hostels if they pay an extra $3 fee for one-night membership.

Quiet hours
Because you are sharing a room with several other people there is generally quiet time after 11 p.m.

Smoking and Alcohol
Neither is allowed inside Hostelling International hostels.

Chores
Most hostels have someone who is hired for general cleanup. But try to pitch in doing something as simple as returning your used linens to the front desk at checkout or drying and putting away the dishes.

Access
Many urban hostels are open 24-hours. In the United States you may run into rural hostels that are closed between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

    • Sometimes the closed hours are the only time the limited staff has to clean the hostel
    • Please be understanding if you are at a hostel with limited hours
