On September 21, 2013, individuals and organizations from around the world will participate in the annual International Day of Peace through celebrations, ceremonies, a global Peace Wave, and much more. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1982, the International Day of Peace -- also known as Peace Day -- serves as a time of collaborative focus on worldwide peace, and encouragement for all of humanity to work in cooperation towards this goal.
HI-USA is allocating $1 from every overnight hostel stay on September 21 towards a scholarship fund for underprivileged youth to experience hostelling. By spending the night at an HI-USA hostel on Peace Day, you're contributing to the cause of providing youth with a vital opportunity for intercultural learning. The nationwide Sleep For Peace campaign aligns with our belief that hostelling improves cultural understanding, and that better cultural understanding leads to peace. Hostels across the US will host screenings of The Day After Peace -- a short film that details the genesis of Peace Day -- as well as other peace-promoting activities and festivities.
The City Center Hostel will host a "Week of Peace" leading up to the International Day of Peace, featuring performances by local musicians, special meals, and film presentations. The week culminates with a screening of The Day After Peace and a live music event at 9 p.m. in the hostel lobby on September 21.
For more details about the International Day of Peace events, please inquire at the hostel's front desk or check the Activities boards when you arrive. All Peace Day events are free, and open only to hostel guests.
