Film events flourish in San Francisco -- for free!

'Tis the season for free film events in San Francisco! Get classy at the iconic Top of the Mark restaurant while enjoying free wine tastings and watching the glamorous Audrey Hepburn. Or perhaps it's time to relive that favorite oldie on the big screen (The Goonies!), with an outdoor screening in one of the city's best parks. And for those evenings in, there are free film screenings at all three of our San Francisco hostels -- nightly at the City Center Hostel, five nights a week at the Fisherman's Wharf Hostel, and weekly at the Downtown Hostel.

Wind Down with Wine and a Movie
Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. through Sept. 3
Join Top of the Mark at their scenic rooftop lounge for classics like Breakfast at Tiffany's  and Blue Hawaii , complete with complimentary wine tastings -- this month featuring Whitehaven sauvignon blanc and Maso Canali pinot grigio. The wine starts flowing at 5:30p.m. with movies kicking off at 7:30 p.m. Top of the Mark is on the 19th floor of the InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel, 1 Nob Hill, just four blocks from the San Francisco Downtown Hostel.

Film Night in the Park
Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. through Sept. 21
This outdoor summer film festival shows favorites in parks across San Francisco. Bring chairs, blankets, and pillows and get ready for classics like The Princess Bride and Singin’ in the Rain, along with newer films like Moonrise Kingdom and The Avengers. Screenings are at Dolores Park in the Mission District, Washington Square Park in North Beach, and Union Square, which is one block from the Downtown Hostel.

Waterfront Flicks
Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. through Aug. 22
Get ready for a night of outdoor cinema and festivities at Jack London Square, across the bay in Oakland. Every Thursday until the end of August, hits like Life of Pi, The Dark Knight Rises, and Skyfall will be screening when the sun goes down. Arrive early for food, beer, trivia, and giveaways, and don't forget sweaters and blankets! Jack London Square is at Broadway and Embarcadero Streets. Take BART to the 12th Street station and either walk or take the 72M bus 10 blocks toward the water.

Iconic Hair Movie Night
First Mondays at 7 p.m. through Dec. 2
Inspired by timeless celebrity hairstyles, this series runs every first Monday of the month at the chic Morphic Salon. Expect stylists, clients, friends, and moviegoers gathering to watch stars like Marilyn Monroe and Jane Fonda sport their foxiest 'dos. Guests are encouraged to dress up according to the night's theme, this month featuring the fabulous and futuristic Barabella. Refreshments are available; additional food and drinks welcome. Find Morphic Salon at 660 Market Street Suite 210, 5 blocks from the Downtown Hostel and one mile from the City Center Hostel.

Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema
Aug. 29 - Sept. 1
Starring local actors, filmmakers, and producers, this annual neighborhood festival is in its tenth year of celebrating indie films. Enjoy shorts and full-length features along with live music and receptions. Keep an eye on their website for a list of screenings. Take MUNI bus #14 or 49 outbound to the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center at 515 Cortland Avenue.

Macabre Movie Nights at the City Center Hostel
Nightly through Aug. 31, 10:00 p.m.
Every night during the summer, the City Center Hostel lobby transforms into an old-fashioned movie house! Enjoy a campy '70s-'90s horror flick, projected onto a 6-foot-wide screen, and pretend to shield your eyes from the cheesy gore of The Lost Boys, Scream, or Tales From the Crypt, to name a few possibilities. So zombie-walk down to the lobby to catch a classic flick and snack on free popcorn, cookies, and soda.

Movie Nights at the Fisherman's Wharf Hostel
Sundays - Thursdays, 8:30 p.m.
The Fisherman's Wharf Hostel screens movies every Sunday - Thursday night in their theatre-style media room. On Wednesdays, there's also free, housemade pizza from Cafe Franco to snack on!

Pizza on The Rock: Movie Night at the Downtown Hostel
Wednesdays, 8:00 p.m.
Head to the hostel's media room for a screening of The Rock, a '90s thriller about chemical warfare and escaping from Alcatraz, with some amazing shots of San Francisco! Hostel staff will also dish up free pizza (which is the best kind of pizza, really).
