Anyone who enjoys traveling and yoga knows that while you’re on the road seeing new places and making new friends it’s not always easy to keep that fitness routine going. Plus, there’s all the different foods to try and spontaneous adventures that aren’t exactly conducive to a solid schedule of vinyasa flows and long hatha sessions. If you happen to be visiting HI San Francisco hostels though, you’ll find that there are ways you can incorporate your wanderlust with your yoga practice with classes taking place in the city’s sweet outdoor spaces. And since we know that traveling on a budget can also be a barrier, we’ve put together a list of yoga classes ranging from the free to the worth-the-splurge experiences to get your mind and body limbered up for hours of exploration.
Yoga in Golden Gate Park
Where better to say Namaste than San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, where you can practice under the trees while a gentle wind from the ocean brings a bit of serenity and fresh, cleansing air? Every Saturday, the Purusha Seva Project, a non-profit organization that promotes yoga as a form of healing for at risk populations like veterans, hosts a delicious morning class in the Redwood Grove Picnic Area. After the session of breathing and movement, there’s a sharing circle and a chance to meet your fellow yogis. Bring a mat or a blanket, some water and maybe a snack so you can spend the rest of the morning exploring the great park.
When: Saturdays, 11:30 a.m.
Where: The grove next to the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden
Stay at: HI San Francisco Downtown Hostel
Yoga at Crissy Field
Do your downward dogs in full view of the Golden Gate Bridge at Crissy Field on Saturday mornings during a more vigorous vinyasa flow session with Outdoor Yoga SF. The fun and athletic classes are great for all levels and an excellent way to get the blood flowing for a day of walking around San Francisco afterwords. They also only take 15 people at a time, so it’s a little more personal and there’s an even greater chance of striking up a conversation with a local who can share hidden gems and city secrets. Along with your mat and water bottle, don’t forget to bring some warm layers since you’ll be right by the windy bay.
When: Saturdays, 10:00 a.m.
Where: Crissy Field, on the beach across from the parking lot
Sign-up: Eventbrite – classes cost $14 per person
Stay at: HI San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf Hostel
Stand up Paddle Yoga
For something a little different and a lot challenging, try your hand (or feet) at stand up paddleboard yoga in a beautiful setting on the north side of the San Francisco bay near Sausalito. OnBoardSup offers these challenging but rewarding sessions where you get to practice your balance and your tree pose while floating on a board in the shallow, ecology rich waters of Richardson Bay. Classes are available several times a week, and afterwards, you can take advantage of your beautiful surroundings. Our recommendation? Hop a ferry in Tiburon to Angel Island and stroll around this underrated Bay Area gem.
When: Visit OnBoardSUP.com for class schedules
Where: Richardson Bay, Sausalito
Sign-up: Classes cost $35 per person for a 75 minute session
Stay at: Catch the ferry to Tiburon near HI SF Fisherman’s Wharf, or add a night at HI Marin Headlands to your San Francisco trip.
You can also DIY with the new friends you make at our hostels, whether you choose to visit a park in San Francisco, take advantage of the yoga room at HI Marin Headlands, or join the occasional beach yoga session offered from HI Point Reyes.
HI USA tip: Get some exercise while cooling down in these top notch swimming spots in Northern California.
