This quaint 1875 lighthouse is perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just 25 miles south of San Francisco. After two ships ran ashore in the late 1860s, the existing fog station was erected and a short time later the present lighthouse was added to complete the site. The former lighthouse keeper’s quarters were renovated to provide year-round affordable accommodations to travelers. The breathtaking setting is a one-of-a-kind retreat.

This hostel is located just across the Golden Gate Bridge at Fort Barry in a setting that is many moods apart from San Francisco: Windswept ridges, protected valleys and access to Rodeo Lagoon, Muir Woods National Monument and Mt. Tamalpais State Park. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday join a docent-led tour of the nearby Point Bonita Lighthouse and learn about famous shipwrecks and the difficult life of its keepers (12:30-3:30 p.m.). Point Bonita began operating in 1855 with a second order lens that reaches 18 miles across the water — the most powerful in San Francisco Bay.
