Group Sales Coordinator
HI-San Francisco

HI-San Francisco is looking for an outgoing, professional, people-person to assist our Group Sales Manager with our three San Francisco hostels.

Hostelling International is a worldwide nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting world peace and understanding through hostelling. We consistently work to provide a safe, interactive, and fun atmosphere for all of our guests.

JOB OVERVIEW
Support the sales efforts of the hostel by performing administrative duties relating to sales. Assist the Group Sales Manager in maintaining existing business clientele relationships, and ensuring maximum profitability for the hostel and quality service for the guests.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

Essential:

  • Ability to satisfactorily communicate in English (speak, read, write) with guests, co-workers, and management to their understanding.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties with attention to detail, speed, accuracy, follow-through, courtesy, and cooperativeness, and to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • High school graduate with some college coursework.
  • Previous hostel experience.
  • Punctuality and regular and reliable attendance.
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with co-workers and the public.

Desirable:

  • Computer knowledge in Windows environment and previous experience with automated property management system.

Essential Physical Abilities:

  • Endure various physical movements throughout the work areas, such as reaching, bending, and stooping.
  • Repetitive hand motion (typing) for extended periods of time.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Answer all incoming calls to the sales department. Assist guests with questions, changes, and special requests.
  • Ensure no leads are abandoned and all calls are returned and requests communicated to appropriate departments.
  • Maintain positive relationships with all guests/clients.
  • Ensure that group functions are completed in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Communicate with front desk on status of group information.
  • Keep credit card/check deposits up to date.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the sales and front desk areas.
  • Maintain complete knowledge at all times of: a) all hostel features/services, hours of operation. b) all room types, numbers, layout, décor, appointments, and location. c) all room rates, special packages, and promotions. d) room availability status for any given day. e) scheduled daily group activities.
  • Change and cancel reservations per guest’s request.
  • Research new sources of business by using various media and community resources.
  • Assist Group Sales Manager on creative projects, such as proposals.
  • In the absence of the Group Sales Manger, conduct scheduled/walk-in sales tours.
  • Other duties as assigned by Group Sales Manager.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
$12/hour. This is a full-time position; liberal vacation, sick leave; 11 paid holidays; health, dental, vision, acupuncture, and chiropractic insurance; 403(b) retirement plan; complimentary overnights at HI-USA hostels.

Hostel Assistant II
HI-Marin Headlands

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide a welcoming atmosphere, while maintaining a clean and secure facility.
  • Deliver Hostelling International and National Park missions in a positive manner.
  • Take reservations for individuals and guests by phone, e-mail, and an online system.
  • Orient guests to the hostel and local area; assist in planning trips.
  • Collect and accurately record overnight fees and sales of goods.
  • Provide emergency assistance when needed.
  • Clean the hostel.
  • Help with special events, educational programs, light maintenance, and other hostel projects.
  • Other duties assigned by the Hostel Managers.

HOURS
24-32 hours per week. Occasionally staff must work a 40 hour week in order to cover another staff’s vacation. Hostel Assistants work a combination of both desk and cleaning shifts. This position necessitates work in early mornings, late evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-site/on-call overnight duties.

COMPENSATION
$8/hour live-in; $10/hour live-out

As part of their compensation HAII employees are offered housing (a wage differential is provided for live-out staff), and may choose to live on or off site. The hostel consists of two federally owned historical buildings under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. Because of this the HAII must be willing to follow the rules of safety and sanitation dictated by Hostelling International and the NPS.

Staff members are eligible to receive health benefits including medical, dental, chiropractic, and acupuncture. These benefits are prorated to the amount of hours worked per week.

Staff Naturalist (on-call)
Outdoor Hostel Adventures

Outdoor Hostel Adventures is an environmental education program that introduces underserved urban youth to the excitement of the natural world. Each year more than 1,500 youth ages 5-18 encounter wildlife, tide pools, native plants, and star-filled skies during overnight trips at three Hostelling International USA hostels: HI-Marin Headlands, HI-Point Reyes, and HI-Point Montara Lighthouse. The hostels are located in unique coastal settings that provide diverse habitats for hands-on learning and discovery. More than 19,000 youth have participated in the program since it was established by HI-USA Golden Gate Council in 1986.

The Hostel Adventure program seeks on-call Naturalists to plan and lead outdoor, environmental education programs for K-12 students in the Marin Headlands, Point Reyes National Seashore, and Fitzgerald Marine Reserve (Point Montara). Naturalists are assigned on an as-needed basis to conduct day and overnight programs which introduce students and adults to the hostelling experience, while helping students to develop:

  • An appreciation and respect for nature through sensory awareness
  • A sense of place for the areas that they are in
  • An understanding of the principles of ecology, and the relationship between the natural and the urban worlds
  • An awareness of the human impact and dependence on the environment, and a sense of stewardship that promotes responsibility in their own lives
  • Communication, teamwork, and leadership skills

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead groups of 10-20 students, grades K-12, in day hikes, night hikes, and interactive environmental education activities
  • Develop program materials
  • Plan and implement programs according to group needs
  • Work with other naturalist staff to plan and lead large group activities
  • Administer program forms to teachers and group leaders
  • Lead classroom presentations, as requested

GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Provide a safe experience for students; handle emergencies responsibly
  • Provide a FUN and ENGAGING experience, for both students and group leaders
  • Meet the goals and expectations of the teachers/group leaders
  • Provide an inclusive environment for all students

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Outdoor education/naturalist experience: training or experience in implementing a wide range of environmental education activities focusing on ecological concepts, team building, sensory awareness, and environmental awareness
  • Experience working with youth ages K-12, with particular experience working with students in grades 3-6
  • Ability to plan and develop curriculum
  • Flexibility in adapting to various group sizes and developmental abilities
  • CPR and Basic First Aid certification
  • Knowledge of flora and fauna located at Marin Headlands, Point Reyes National Seashore, and Fitzgerald Marine Reserve (Point Montara) preferred
  • Prior experience working with inner-city youth preferred

HOURS
This is a part-time, on-call position.

COMPENSATION
$140-$160/day and evening program

Naturalists also receive free overnights at HI-USA hostels and free Hostelling International membership.
