Annual Lighting and Celebration at Pigeon Point Lighthouse

Each November, thousands of visitors gather to witness the annual lighting of the original first-order Fresnel lens at Pigeon Point Lighthouse, and to celebrate the anniversary of the first lighting more than 130 years ago. The annual celebration, instituted by Hostelling International more than a decade ago, has become so popular that the California State Parks department now acts as master of ceremonies by inviting the U.S. Coast Guard to switch the lights, and local community and environmental organizations participate as well.

Hostel Adventure Program welcomes San Francisco's Latchkey Kids

Some San Francisco kids have never been out of their inner-city neighborhoods, let alone on a beach. This summer, a pilot partnership between the City of San Francisco's Latchkey Program and the Hostel Adventure Program of HI-USA Golden Gate Council brought 200 urban youth out of the noise and concrete of the city to the rolling hills and dramatic coastline of the Marin Headlands for a day of environmental education.
