You’re Invited: Two Community Walls Art Receptions (May 18, 19)

Community Walls

Hostelling International’s Community Walls program seeks to bring cultural understanding and community vision and voice to youth in grades 2-12.

Kids in different neighborhoods, schools, or programs in San Francisco spend 5-10 weeks with Community Walls educators learning about their own community and painting murals which reflect it in some way.

Two groups of students will present their Community Walls murals this May:

May 18 - Kids ages 9-12 from Ernest Ingold Boys & Girls Club in Lower Haight will present their third set of Community Walls murals. This time around, they focused on the carousel in Golden Gate Park. They learned about the history of the carousel, rode it, and painted a mural about it over a period of six weeks.

May 19 - Third graders at Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy in the Castro spent eight weeks working on two murals inspired by their school’s namesake, Harvey Milk. The school’s focus is on achieving academic excellence while inspiring tolerance and non-violence, celebrating diversity, and building a strong school-family-community connection.

Students will be at each reception to present their canvases, which will be on display at San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf Hostel following the reception. Snacks, drinks, and cake will be served; the event is open to the public.
