Sand Lot City: The Sunset and "Carville-by-the-Sea"

Join a San Francisco Historical Society docent for a historic walk along the edge of the city's Sunset district.

Your guide Woody LaBounty takes you to the boundaries of "Carville-by-the-Sea," a 1890s bohemian settlement of obsolete horse cars and cable cars inhabited by artists, judges, and lady bicyclists.

Visit the sites of former roadhouses, speakeasies, and "houses of mystery." Explore how recreational activities at the beaches and an early steam train line helped develop sand dunes into San Francisco's largest district. Be sure to check out the unique beach cottage architecture on the houses nearby.

Meet at the corner of La Playa Street and Lincoln Way.
