Miles and miles of hiking trails surround this hostel in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area at Fort Barry. Only 15 minutes from San Francisco, it is the perfect escape for hiking, bicycling or relaxing in a majestic natural setting. The Tennessee Valley trail meanders through a spectacular blend of natural beauty and ends at a small beach with a powerful surf. Stinson Beach, only a short drive away along scenic Highway 1, stretches beneath steep hills that rise to Mt. Tamalpais (swimming is permitted from May-Sept. only).

This charming 1908 pioneer homestead is located in the mist-shrouded Redwood National Park. HI-Redwood National Park encompasses both redwood groves and a spectacular coastline where a mosaic of habitats intersect: Woodlands, underbrush, waterways and wildlife. The landscape reflects the parks’ efforts to preserve 45 percent of all the old-growth redwood forest remaining in California. The hostel is located seconds from the beach and miles of magnificent old-growth hiking trails. Enderts Beach and Crescent Beach provide outstanding views of the Pacific Ocean and access to tide pools.

Located two miles from the Pacific Ocean, HI-Point Reyes is the perfect location to explore sandy and rocky beaches framing the 70,000-acre Point Reyes National Seashore. The main hostel is a remodeled late 19th Century ranch house and the separate bunkhouse is popular for groups and retreats. The park’s beaches are also excellent places to view the annual gray whale migration, January through April. Don’t miss the Point Reyes Peninsula, which juts 12 miles from the mainland into the Pacific Ocean.

This is one of California’s most charming lighthouses with a mix of private and dorm rooms in the nearby lighthouse keepers’ housing. The unique setting is a perfect base for exploring beaches and tide pools, watching the annual gray whale migration, and bicycling the coastline. Montara State Beach, a two-mile sandy beach area, is a popular spot for sunbathing, strolling, nature study and picnicking. The Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is a spectacular four-mile stretch of protected California coastline. During low tides, a colorful array of starfish, crabs, mussels, abalone, sea anemones and other marine animals are exposed and visible in tide pools.
